Those of you who have followed my blog and/or my works for a while now might have noticed that I’m not a huge fan of linework. Nor do I usually like them aesthetically speaking, but when it comes to actually doing them myself — impossible. Nevertheless I had to try, if only for the delusion that I might pull it off, be quicker and get a nice (different) look.

You can probably guess how this went down, but here it is in a step by step account:

Part 1. Sketching, or the first mistake.
“Can’t be bothered to find refs. I’ll just draw something. After all I know how to draw stuff!”

Yup, so do I indeed. I don’t think that blob has ever even seen a Finnhorse. As good news: it did take only half a night to produce this and a whopping amount of pained sighs.

Part 2. Lines, or that second thing that went wrong.
“Yeah, I’ll do these as vectors! Brilliant! At least I’m good at vectoring!”
Managed to draw the line of the horse’s buttocks and the top line of the tail before realising my hand shakes like I was suffering from coffee withdrawals.

“Oops, maybe I’m not actually that good. Maybe I need another tool… What’s this… Looks nice, let’s use that one.”

I must state for the record that I have never ever laughed as much while painting as I did during this lining. My hand is unbelievably unaccustomed at drawing clean lines, I can’t use any tool and to top that my OS didn’t recognise using the tablet’s pen as user being active so the screen saver kept flicking on constantly.

The finished product is absolutely thoroughly gorgeous. What else can it be with sketching as fabulous as I had! From the tail one might be able to deduce that I have drawn an Arab or two in my time. And that cleaning up… The what now?

Part 3. Colouring, or logically speaking the next thing going wrong.
After finishing my beautiful lineart there was no other option than to colour it somehow. The best way is to choose a tool you have never even heard of before and select totally random settings. “It will work!” Next, choose a colour you never manage to get right for the horse. Make it with totally random colours that clash.

Well, it’s fun to have fun. Once in a while.

I had the flu this week and thus had a tiny amount of time for art stuff. Which was kinda nice because I really had the inclination to be productive.

Until the realization that nothing works.

I started with fiddling some long overdue commissions. Veeery slow fiddling and faffing about and nothing really happened. On the contrary, everything went from bad to worse. An example above. I cannot fathom why on earth it’s so damn difficult to get colours and brushes to work as you’d like when working digitally. Why on earth palominos never ever agree to be even remotely palomino-y?! Ack, feel like throwing up because nothing’s working. If I could, I wouldn’t do these things.

The other thing on this week’s to do was pieces for an upcoming show. Well, actually either finish those WIPs or choose works from the already finished ones. Why on earth isn’t there any worth looking at?

Difficult, utterly difficult. It’s unreasonably annoying that I have all this need and wanting to paint but nothing’s going anywhere. Nothing’s working the way I’d like it to work and I never manage to try out anything new. Everything I do just slides into the same old rut and run into the same old problems.

Sometimes painting and doing it alone really drive me up the wall. Instruction and feedback is crucial for improvement.

• how great it is to paint
• how I’ve had about fifteen minutes to paint
• how I love colours.

Active WIPs include at least this grey pony. It’s fun to paint something soft and blended for a change.

Other WIPS include failed watercolour paintings and plans for bigger paintings. I really miss painting (well, mostly succeeding) with oils.

In other news, I’ve reserved an exhibition slot for this Summer. Have no clue what I’m going to show, but really a lot very much want it to be something colourful.

Longer and more interesting updates in the future, I sincerely hope.

But on with the show!

This week, on Sunday, was the first meeting of the watercolour course. I was a bit nervous about my skill level but the course seemed alright. I hope I’ll get better as I got some practice under my belt.

I was a bit ambitious and started with painting a pheasant. It was calling me with its bright purple chest during the intro, so really no choice.

(The picture quality is truly horrible and doesn’t really give out the best impression. I have to take a better one later. But in the meantime, enlarge the painting for it to make even the slightest bit of sense.)

I really didn’t pay much attention to the scale so the head is extremely small compared to the body. Mostly on purpose, seriously.

Well, that’s about that. The other thing I got finished is an age-old Arabian painting. I actually thought I had uploaded it to my blog already, but since I hadn’t, and I did some small tweaks to it, I think it is a nice way to bulk up my “This Week’s Finished” posting.

Next week I hope to post several of those “nearly finished” pieces I have lying around.

There isn’t much to write home about this week. I’ve been tinkering with the huge backlog of overdue commissions I have. I hope to start catching up at the end of this month.

This post’s piece is a commission of a buckskin New Forest stallion. I think I might have given him a bit of a wrong look, but I try and fix it as I put more work to it. (This was at one hour mark.)

On other news, this Sunday I have the very first lesson of my watercolour course. Terribly excited, especially after hearing we get a JMW Turner exhibition up here later this year! I’d really love learning the “one minute watercolour” he practised, but I expect I will be extremely happy with a “one hour watercolour” with my endless fiddlings and whatnots…

Also, I’ve been asked to give a talk and/or a short (day and a half or thereabouts) course about Something Interesting. Haven’t got a clue about the topic but I hope it’ll materialise. (Though originally there’s been a request to give a talk about something general I’ve learned at school, like colour theory, and the course possibly about lino printing.)
I need to mull it over a bit, let’s see if this pulls through!

So nothing to show you from the list I half-promised you last Wednesday. They are going well, just none of them got the finishing touches I hoped to get done during the weekend.

Instead, this picture posted is a quick-ish drawing I did to practice greyscale images digitally (something I really hate and suck at) and not to make it too easy, I also used no references for it! It’s a huge deal since I always use refs. And perhaps it shows why I do…

A Quarter Horse stallion. Not really finished per se (the legs, the legs…).

So this week I’ve been working on a great many pieces: few Finnhorses, an Icelandic, a riding pony and Arabians. This piece is a blood bay Finnhorse mare which has been in the works for some time. As per usual, I was lazy and didn’t bother with taking a more recent screen grab, but she hasn’t progressed all that much.

Usually these postings are a bit dull, but I aim to give more info from now on. Next posting will hopefully be my “set of goals” posting, possibly tomorrow. If not, I’ll aim to post a couple of finished works on Sunday. So until then, keep making art!

Kaiken hyvän lisäksi oli vielä hirveä into ja himo maalata! Mikä voisikaan mennä vikaan!

No, aika moni asia, näemmä.

Luku 1, se kauiten odottanut pitäisi jo vihdoin saada pois…“Teen nyt vihdoin tän roikkuvan loppuun, ei siinä enää paljon ole”, tuumi hän. Photoshop kauniiseen käteen ja kuva auki. Mustien sekoittelua, jalka-asentojen korjausta. Vihellellen hän lisää varjoa tuomaan syvyyttä. Sitten, täysin pyytämättä ja ilmoittamatta, saapuu kamala valaistuminen. Sehän on ihan kamala, eikä yhtään sellainen kuin piti. Blergh!

Hätä ei ole onneksi tämän näköinen. Urhea sankarimme ajattelee olevansa ovela kuin päivävuoroon siirtynyt kettu ja vaihtaa kuvaa.

Luku 2, jos et voi olla järjestelmällinen, ole ainakin nopea
“Tämä nyt ainakin on nopeasti valmis!” hän lohduttaa itseään. “Eihän tästä nyt puutu juuri mitään, katson vaikka leffan samalla ja siinäpä se. Sitten voi palata vähän vaikeampaan.”
Puoli tuntia myöhemmin näyttämölle astuu vanha tuttumme, pyytämätön valaistuminen.
“Hetkinen”, hän sanoo, “tässä on nyt jotain hieman pielessä”. Mitä, kas se ilmenee pian.
“Niin, tän piti olla voikko. Miksihän tämä näyttää nyt ihan shamppanjahallakolta?”

Seuraa masennus ja armoton ketutus. Kuitenkin vaaroja kaihtamatta seuraavana päivänä pääkärsijämme yrittää uudelleen onnistumista.

Luku 3, jos et voi olla edes nopea, tee sitten asiat luokattoman hyvin
“Ainakin voisi luonnostella yhden roikkuvan kuvan pois kuleksimasta”, tuumii päähenkilömme selvästi nöyrtyneenä. “Kovin monta juttua ei tässä voi mennä vikaan.”
Silti sieltä aina muutama varmasti perille löytävä ilmaantuu.
“Jalka-akselit, mitä ne on? Ai tummanpunaruunikko? Mikähän se näistä miljoonasta hevosesta oikeasti on… Ja miksihän puoliverisiltä katoaa kaulat aina jonnekin? Ei se mitään, piirretään pää yhdeksättä kertaa uusiksi.”
Pienet korjaukset täyttävät pimenevän illan. Lopulta ei ole enää muuta tehtävissä kuin iskeä väriä tuomaan jotain illuusiota oikeasti toimivasta suunnitelmasta, sulkea softa ja toivoa, että se menee läpi.
… paitsi että ne ketun sukat. Unohtuu aina.

Ja näin päättyy pieni tarinamme hyvistä aikomuksista. Tarinamme moraali ei liene epäselvä kenellekään.

Ei näin, ei todellakaan näin.

(Voisi edes nanonsa nanoilla kunnialla loppuun sen sijaan, että kirjoittaa turhia postauksia blogiin tai foorumeille. Mutta ei näemmä edes sitäkään.)

Torstaina 17.3. oli Tampereella kutsuvieraille Ladyn tyyli -näyttelyn avajaiset. En ollut hirvittävän innostunut lähtemään, kun en filistealaisena tajunnut mistä näyttelyssä oli kyse (eli kutsukortin informaatio ei minulle riitä!).

Olen todella iloinen, että menin!

Näyttelyhän on Lady Ostapeckin kuvista ja Haiharalle lahjoittamistaan puvuista koottu. Itse Lady on amerikansuomalainen 93-vuotias (!, Lady oli itse paikalla) valokuvaaja, joka pukee kuvattavansa 1800-luvun lopun ja 1900-luvun alkupuolen vaatteisiin, ympäristöihin ja rooleihin. Klikatkaa linkkiä ja tutkikaa, on sen arvoista! Jos siis ette ole vielä törmänneet.

Näissä kuvissa todella näki sen, kuinka voi lisätä vaikka kuinka paljon kauniita asioita pieneen tilaan ilman, että tulee sekava tai tylsä kokonaisuus. Historiallisista puvuistahan olen pitänyt kersasta asti, nykyään ihastus suuntautuu enemmän 1910-1930 -lukujen muotiin, joita oli myös esillä ihanat esimerkit.
(Näin aihetta sivuten: olenko se minä vain, kun ennen kaikki esineet olivat niin paljon kauniimpia? Samaa huokailen aina kun katson tv-sarjaa “Upstairs, Downstairs” [suomeksi Kahden kerroksen väkeä ?] ja sitä nyt tulee aika tiiviisti katsottua…)

Tunsin itseni jotenkin oudosti inspiroituneeni. En osaa tarkkaan sanoa miksi. Kävisikö jokin seuraavista?

1) Oli ihanaa nähdä kauniita asioita pelkkien symbolististen tekotaiteellisten yhteiskunnallisesti muka merkittävien ja ties minkä ns. nykytaiteen sijaan. Henkilökohtaista, kaunista, pieniä hetkiä.

2) Oli lohdullista kuulla ja nähdä se ajatus, että aikaa on. Monessakin yhteydessä näyttelystä puhuttaessa on sanottu, että luova voi olla ties kuinka kauan.

3) Vielä lohdullisempaa on se, että oman juttunsa voi löytää ihan sattumalta ja missä vain. Lady löysi kameransa ja tyylinsä sattumalta kirpputorilta. Tiedä josko löytäisin siis omani vaikka ensi viikolla junassa!

Uskon, että tulen käymään näyttelyssä vielä ainakin pari kertaa. Nyt olen käynyt jo neljästi avajaiset mukaanlukien. Haluaisin kovasti ottaa mukaan kyniä ja papereita ja ihan vain katsoa yksityiskohtia ja piirtää. (Ja samalla voisi katsoa sen Tampere 1918 -näyttelyn vähän paremmin kuin tähän asti.)

Edelleen kipeänä, mutta (toivottavasti, kop kop) paranemaan päin.

Tänään vihdoin oli energiaa, ja päällä kestävyyttä, sen verran, että jaksoin maalatakin koneella. Walkkis kuvasta alla.

Vedos, suhteellisen siisti luonnos (en näemmä säästänyt korjauslayereitä). Normaali kova pyöreä sivellin, pen pressure size.

Pohja, tärkeimpien pohjavärien lisäys luonnoksen alle, sivellin sama kuin edellä.

Pohja 2, edellisen vaiheen tarkennusta, muutaman päävärin lisäys. Sivellin tarkennusvaiheessa sama kuin edellä, mutta välillä pen pressure myös opacity. Taustaan lisäsin värisuunnitelman tuomaan “tunnelmaa”.

Pohja 3, luonnoksen piilotus, että alkaa näkemään pysyykö hevonen koossa. Paljon uutta tekstuuria päähän ja kaulaan, rungon kolmiuloitteisuuden hakemista. Tekstuuria, tekstuuria…

Versio 1, taustan tarkennusta ja hevosen “ääriviivaamista” perusvärien palikoilla. Lisää tekstuuria.

Versio 2, viimeinkin pehmennystä! Samalla takaosan aloitus ja  muodon hakemista. Taustaan sen verran muokkauksia, että sain itselleni paremmin hahmotettua valon suuntaa ja mikä tilanne kyseessä. (Ei ehkä kuitenkaan avaudu katsojalle.)

Versio 3, enemmän jalkoja sekä aikaisemman työn pehmennystä: sivellin vaihtunut pyöreään kovaan, jossa pen pressure vain opacityssä.

Versio 4, poni lähes valmis. Vaihdoin taustan mustaksi paremmin erottaakseni esimerkiksi “ääriviivojen” ylitykset (ks. esim. oikea takajalka!). Samalla musta tuo hyvä pohjan miettiä mitä ihmettä sitä taustalle tekee: olin kyllästynyt viimeistään viime vaiheessa taustaan.

… ja maagisesti sillä onkin tausta ja se on valmis! Koska tämä meni niin nopeasti ja unohdin ottaa kuvia, kerron sanallisesti mitä tein:

• poistin mustan taustan ja laitoin tilalle aikaisemmin tekemäni oman gradientin, jossa on käytännössä räikeä vaaleansininen ja räikeä vihreä, keskellä vähän “valkoista” -> valmis geneerinen tausta. Säädin lisäämäni gradientin layer mode -paneelista ja layer opacitystä sopimaan omaan ajatukseeni.
• vedin suurella custom-siveltimellä (tullut jossain sivellinsetissä) kaksi ohutta kerrosta harmaanpunaruskeanviolettia kulmittain vihreän yläpuolelle. Lisäsin taustaan vaaleanpunaista ja peilasin sitä vähän tumman osan yläreunaan.
• vihreään osaan jollain toisella custom-siveltimellä erilaisia vihreitä ja keltaisia.
• perussiveltimellä (pyöreä kova, pen pressure opacity) tummanviolettia ja ruskeaa varjoksi, samalla tummaan osaan violettia ohuesti sekä keltaista tumman osan alareunaan. Pinkin osan tasoitusta samalla.
