My PC is still dead. The silver lining is that it forces me to do more traditional stuff. That’s one of my goals these year too (I’ll write more on my goals later).

However, because the year is already long in tooth, I’m posting my first pics for the year. One of my goals/challenges, whatever you want to call it, is to make two horse portraits per week. I took the first two weeks off for holidays’ sake, so these first ones I made in week 3.

This week’s finished work is a commission I tried to finish a month ago. “Tried” mainly because of all the work hassles.

Very much inside the comfort zone because it’s a graphite work with a fairly traditional approach. Very much outside because it’s about dogs. Without exaggeration these are numbers 10 and 11 on my dog drawing career. Thusly my only guide was the references I had and frankly I still don’t have a clue on how to read character in dogs for example.

In a way this was a very successful learning opportunity. The medium and the style were very familiar to me even if the subject was really alien. Maybe someday I’ll learn more if I keep taking baby steps.

Viimekerralla kerroinkin jo, että viritimme kiilakankaita. Minulle siunaantui niitä kolme: yksi tarkoituksenmukainen (eli mitä opettaja halusi meidän kaikkien tekevän), yksi iiiso (eli mitä opettaja yritti kaupata, ettei se enää kulkisi luokassa) ja yksi pienempi ja kapea (eli mikä nyt vaan himotti). Mittasinkin pohjat, mutta enhän minä enää niitä muista. Olisiko ollut 60 x 70, 80 x 80 ja 70 x 40 cm minun sarjani. Mittaan joskus uudestaan.

Teemana meillä on edelleen se “glokaaleja kohtaamisia”, enkä voi kertoa kauheasti valaistuneeni. Koska tuo pitkäkkään muotoinen pohja huusi itselleen maisemaa, lähdin miettimään asioita sen kautta. Koska Helsingin siluetti ideana oli aika kuluneen oloinen, se karsiutui siihen. Aloin miettimään muunlaista Helsinkiä, peltoja ja luontoa. Ja siitä sitten päädyin itselle tutumpaan seutuun ja niinkutsuttu idea oli valmis.

Luonnos kertoo kaiken olennaisen:

Seuraavaksi mietin, että se olisi vaikuttavampi pidempänä. Koska pidempää pohjaa ei ollut, ajattelin jakaa tuon “keskikokoisen” pohjan pystysuunnassa kolmeen allekaiseen lokeroon (ks. edellisen kuvan oikea yläreuna) ja laittaa jokaiseen yhden elementin työstä.

Neliöpohjalle minulla myöskin oli olemassa idea. Osastossa “vähän tavallisempi Helsinki-kuva”. Se nyt kuoli vähän ennen kuin oppi elämään, kuten kuvista näkyy:

Kolmatta ideaa en sitten enää saanut materialisoitumaan edes googlettamalla, joten päätin heittää kynät nurkkaan ja maalata tuon ensimmäisen idean mukaisen pohjamaalauksen.

Sanoista tekoihin ja aloitin jakamalla 4B-lyijykynällä (tarkkuuden olennaisuus ilmenee kohta) pohjan viivojen mukaisiin osiin. Sitten hahmottelin perusmuotoja hyvin ohuella öljymaalilla. Kun olin hahmotellut kaikki kolme osaa, tajusin, että eihän se niin toimi. Siis kumi käteen ja poistamaan viivoja.

Esitän vain yhden kysymyksen: oletteko koskaan yrittäneet poistaa 4B-kynän viivoja kankaalta puolikostean öljymaalin alta? Minä olen, valitettavasti. Voin myös kertoa, että yritykseksi jää.

No, eikun uutta päälle niin, että jaoinkin työn nyt pituussuunnassa kahtia. Pyyhin mahdollisimman paljon väriä pois ja yritin olla välittämättä.

Tämän kolossaalisen ajanhukan jälkeen otin pitkäkkään pohjan käsittelyyn. Aloin suhteellisen rohkeasti maalaamaan sille vastaavan, hieman jatkokehitellyn, idean pohjamaalausta.

Sain maalattua koko pohjaan värin ennen kuin tajusin kuinka hirvittävän tylsä ja samanlainen kuin kaikki muutkin työni ko. pohjalle oli muodostumassa. Pysäytin siveltimen ja aloin miettimään. Haaveilin jostain laajasta kuvasta, sellaisesta, jossa horisontti olisi todella ylhäällä kuvaa. Ja että kuvassa olisi talvi. Ehdottomasti talvi.
Tyylin tuo.  Mutta hienompi. En vain osannut hahmottaa, että miten siihen pääkohteeni tulevat ilman, että perspektiivi on kumma ja ties mitä.

Katsoin hetken sotkua pohjalla ja sanoin “sod it” ja kävelin kotiin nukkumaan. Ei minun päiväni.

Firstly, as a text-only update, I must brag about the old paintings I’ve been fixing. I am a little annoyed at how lazy I tend to be: it might be a valid option to do everything properly on the first go… Alright, to some extent this comes down to using my time wisely…

Secondly, finally a test piece that has been on the works for at least two months.

Gessoed MDF, a thin layer of acrylics and topped with watercolours. For quite some time now I’ve been thinking whether watercolours stick on top of acrylic paints (for fixing stuff etc.). Yes it does, but I should’ve bothered with fixative for some parts. But really, as  you can deduct from the quality of this work, I finished very quickly instead of really making this a proper piece.

I couldn’t have imagined how difficult it was to control the painting process. However, I’m guessing mostly this was due to two things: wrong kind of brush and too hard (= non-absorptive) painting surface. I would think this would work better with a thick paper.

On the plus side one could mark the superb effects, especially in background work. The colours ran and blended really nicely, though a bit unexpectedly. A bit more patience and with better planning this could produce pretty neat works! I also liked the textures on the horse, even though otherwise the horse was pretty ruined due to bad colour choices.

Next time the amount of white must be drastically limited. It’s really difficult to cover up mistakes and approximations in the acrylic blocking stage with watercolour. (See the pale area reserved for the mane and edges with the background blue…) I also need to investigate why the watercolour didn’t cover all the parts of the board nicely.

All in all, a nice experiment even if the result wasn’t all that hot.

The last picture for this week is an age-old graphite drawing which I really had the energy to finish up. Finally, finally. The scan might be lying a bit about the darkness of the background etc., but…

In lieu of the WW posting, I’m posting a short reflection on what I got from the first session of the course “Visual Expression”. Our theme for the course is “Glocal — Encounters” and every work should tackle that in some ways. On Wednesdays we paint, on Thursdays we do printing assignments (lino, mono, serigraphy, etc.). This Thursday’s posting will come after Wednesday when I get to assess my accomplishments. (There were none, to be honest, so I’m just trying to postpone the inevitable “don’t have anything to report” posting.)

So, Wednesdays are for painting. On the first lesson we started from the beginning, which, by the classical way of thinking, is drawing. First we reviewed the different ways and techniques to use a pen and lines.

The assignment itself was to practice values through drawing either from still lifes or doing a emotive/memory drawing. The added guideline was to use a line type you normally don’t use. Because I’m thoroughly lazy, my drawing turned out to be stylistically the same mess as everything I do. So I aimed to do smaller elements in different styles (the clearest example probably being the wood that frames the main subject).

I chose to try my hand at the “emotive” thingy and my aim was to create a soft, calm and warm feeling. At the same time I tried to bring out the centre of the drawing as well as possible. Added to that I attempted a slight fish eye distortion, but it’s surprisingly difficult to draw crooked walls on purpose! To further add more clashing elements, I gave the horse a slightly worried, even a little intimidated, look especially on the (our) right side. I’m still considering adding a whip to my girl’s left hand to give a slightly scared/nervous feel.

Due to having no earthly (or heavenly, for that matter) references, I needed to take a slight break from the piece and leave especially the head and hands in a bit too unfinished stage. I try to mull them over before next Wednesday and fix them if I have the time.

So, any learning experiences?

Well, at least that I can’t stick to a predetermined look or style.
That “mindless” shading is sometimes quite fun.
And sometimes forgetting the right perspective or light directions (ie. breaking the rules) really works AND adds something to the picture.
I need to draw more without any refs.
I am a terrible snob when it comes to art materials.

Next week we’re on to painting. Very nice. Drawing is not my game.

Eli jälleen epäonnistunut yritys saada asioita aikaan! Kesällä ajattelin ottaa itselleni luonnoskirjahaasteen: puolessa vuodessa 60 (tai 59, jännien teknisten syiden takia) muotokuvaluonnosta hevosista.

Ehdin tekemään 16. Kyllä, laimeat 16.

Mutta ei se mitään! Jatkan tänä vuonna ja yritän saada tehtyä 19.06. mennessä loput. Katsotaan kuin käy!

Vuosi 2011 tulee olemaan monella tapaa erilainen vuosi verrattuna (muutamaan) aikaisempaan.

Ensinnäkin aion lopettaa hevosten harjoittelemisen. Tähän saakka olen treenannut hevosia erilaisten tutkielmien muodossa. Viime vuonna koin saaneeni tarpeeksi ja ensimmäistä näyttelyäni valmistellessani mieleni alkoi tekemään uusia horisontteja. En vieläkään ole päättänyt ihan tarkkaan mikä tulee olemaan vuoden 2011 aihe, mutta se on mahdollisesti kasvit (botanical art), kissat, linnut tai kotilot. Kerron heti kun tiedän.
Tämä ei kuitenkaan tarkoita sitä, ettenkö tekisi enää hevosia. Ei. Teen hevosia kun huvittaa, sellaisia kuin huvittaa. Harjoittelen vähemmän. Nautin enemmän. Ja tietenkin taistelen tilaustöiden parissa.

Toiseksi, tuttuun tapaan, on tiedossa uuden median opettelu. Tämäkin on vielä kolmen vaiheilla: vesivärit, pastellit tai puuvärit. Media tullee riippumaan kovasti siitä, minkä aiheen valitsen.

Kolmanneksi otan suunnitelmiini useamman ison päätyön. Näitä on jo listalla, katsotaan kuin ämmän käy! Tavoitteet ovat korkealla ja kaukana. (Tähän tulee omaa postauksensa aika varmasti.)

Neljänneksi: tänä vuonna lupaan ottaa taiteen vakavammin. Harjoittelen enemmän, teen paremmin, yritän saada myytyä ja kokeilen uutta. Mietin tavoitteet ja pistän itseni töihin. Olen tilivelvollinen jos ei muuta, niin tälle blogille. Lupaan myös muistaa nauttia taiteesta enemmän. Löytää itseäni. Ja ennen kaikkea — tehdä asioita loppuun!

Eiköhän tämä ollut tarpeeksi korkealentoinen ja syvällinen aloitus? Ainakin aikeeni lienevät tulleen selväksi.
